Oh, my Pudgie, originally uploaded by suitablegirl.

Note: This was originally on my Fotolog-- but I ran out of space there and wanted to provide an opportunity for people to comment, since that is not enabled on my flog.

Once upon a time--June of 2002, to be pacific—an exhilarated girl procured her first digital camera, because she was going to be a panelist at HOkana (attending THAT event was a first for this thenga, too). While she took some pictures at the conference and at a few events afterwards, she wasn't really feeling it, because *she* was the girl who had a Costco membership JUST for the one-hour photo access. How could someone who always got doubles (sometimes triples!), who loved touching and seeing images without a screen or a battery/AC cord enjoy this sterile version of photography? The impressive (“World’s smallest!”) toy she bought started to gather dust.

Just over a year later-- July of 2003, to be pacific-- a bored girl browsing Gawker took note of a post which mentioned "Fotolog". She googled, surfed, then joined, on a whim. Perhaps this would inspire her to actually use her Minolta? I mean, why bother taking pictures if you have nowhere to put them (this was long before Facebook and Flickr), right? Slowly she got used to taking her camera with her and photographing things which she found interesting, though it was a struggle-- who was *she* to pretend to be a photographer? Why should anyone care about what she shot? And wouldn't her technique be non-existent or worse, awful? It was intimidating, because everyone she encountered on the site was a professional with gorgeous work to display. Beyond that, she didn't know anyone else on Fotolog. Oh, and she didn't like her username, either. All of this almost turned her off, but then, a kind Angeleno complimented one of her pictures. Positive feedback from a pro was encouraging and it inspired a desire to give this fotologging thing a final try-- but this time, with a NEW username, one which she was also using on her first blog, on blogspot. She deleted and re-registered, this time as “Suitablegirl”.

THIS time, her Fotolog, then shortened to "flog", actually flourished—so much so that she upgraded to Gold, because to her astonishment, she had more than one picture a day to share. She uploaded shots of San Francisco (is there an easier city to photograph?), her German Shepherd, Rani (snore in one of your contorted positions in peace, beloved friend)and her godson, Pudgesicle (= perfection)—it was addictive. Her friends started to tune in regularly, to divert themselves while at work. Rani and Pudgesicle became small stars in the flog galaxy and the people who knew them IRL loved catching up with both of them (and occasionally their photographer, even) online. What an easy way to see what everyone was up to! :) Even those serving abroad, on the other side of the world, could surf by at their convenience, to sate homesickness via images of Mom, dog, sister.

::

In the years since that auspicious start, I have grown up (a little), moved away (a lot), been interviewed by the media about this aspect of Web 2.0 (cool!), met someone who is now an ex-bf (what a year THAT was) and discovered a previously-unknown cousin (Hi Lisa!), all thanks to Fotolog. My Fotolog was also the catalyst for profound, occasionally confusing, mostly gratifying development within, regarding my identity (or previous lack of one, more accurately), as someone of Malayalee descent.

Growing up around no other Desis (let alone specific types of them/members of even more specific Christian denominations), attending a Greek Orthodox church instead of a Syrian one and THEN attending a University where I was the only Malayalee undergrad for a few years meant that I felt VERY disconnected from something which many of you rightly take for granted. Thanks to Fotolog, I have done something I never thought I would-- forge relationships with other Malayalee women [I never had the opportunity to do so before :( ], and I am emotionally wealthier for it.

You should all know- you are now a part of my life, even though I don't have the opportunity to keep up with you here.

I happily keep track of you on Facebook, keep you in my prayers and think about you at random moments…when catching a rerun of “Who’s the boss?”, spotting Balenciaga bags or eating German Chocolate cake, for example. I love you and I love the way you have improved me, humbled me and taught me, even more.

I started this Fotolog when my little baby boy was six weeks old. Now he is four and so are we.

A lot is changing in my life and it’s time for me to change, too, whether I’m willing to do so or not. These changes mean accepting a different mentality, one where other priorities take precedence over those I currently hold; they also remind me that I only have so much time to do the things I dream of and if I want to be honest with myself, I cannot update four blogs, three social networking accounts, two Fotologs and one Flickr stream consistently. It’s time to move on, to streamline, to focus, to start anew. :)

I might still tell you what’s in my purse (Oh, come ON. Like I could give THAT up), invite you to experience my memories via HERstory or welcome your advice on my diary, but this Fotolog will no longer be updated. I have deleted my MySpace account, retired my Friendster profile and will take down “Closet”, shortly. However, I haven’t lost that loving feeling which Flog gave me, for my camera and digital photography; I have been a power user of Flickr for a year now and I love the functionality, clean design and freedom from nasty advertising I find yonder.

I know, it’s not the same as over here. Checking out which of my friends on Flickr have uploaded something new, via my “home” page, will never be as easy as glancing at the right sidebar on my flog, but I’ve been doing it for well over a year now, so obviously this curmudgeon is capable of doing things differently. My only regret is that all of you aren’t Flickr users, but I’m noticing that more and more of you are uploading albums to Facebook (which I adore btw) and that’s a lovely way to keep in touch.

So, thank you. You have allowed me in to your lives and because of such generosity of spirit and trust, I have watched you find love, get married, have babies, buy homes and do the happy, normal things which generally inspire *my* very Peter Pan-like self to procrastinate. :) It’s amazing to think that I wouldn’t know, let alone have attended Sibil and Nina’s weddings if it weren’t for Flog. See? Something seemingly small changed everything, and I am lucky it did. I wish each of you the best, you deserve nothing less.

Wait, WHAT is in my purse again?

WIMP final., originally uploaded by suitablegirl.

...my infamous Fotolog is back from the dead.  I know, right?  Can you believe this was once the most popular outpost of me far-flung empire?  :)

One Marvelous Meetup

IMG_7298, originally uploaded by suitablegirl.

Sunday's meetup pictures are up on flickr, in one compact little album which you can peruse here.  Even though it was disgusting and wet outside, I had a scintillating and then sweet time, first at Heritage India, later at Cosi (and even later, at Tryst).  Bonding with ridiculously intelligent, witty conversationalists might be the best way to blow through a Sunday-- I know I didn't want any of the laughter (and vaguely obscene gestures) to end.

I swear shit like this keeps me afloat, it helps me come up for air, right before I fall back in to the more predictable bad news and worse luck which has characterized far too many weeks for me.  I really hope everything changes soon, if only so Sibil doesn't have to exclaim that when it rains, it REALLY POURS in my case, because I think she and I are both a little sickened by all the precipitation.

dc meetup 005, originally uploaded by suitablegirl.

After lunch at Amsterdam Falafel, when my friends and I were heading back to hotel and home respectively, we saw a tiny crowd gathering outside Caribou Cafe on 18th st in the Morg, taking pictures.  Being, well, ME, I HAD to see what the hot fuss was about...and now you can see, too.

Someone had this huge, shoft, fuzzy wuzzy bunny rabbit on the most delicate leash; it was just chillin' outside on a gorgeous fall day, waiting patiently while its owner got a coffee (w/o killing someone within who has rabbit allergies...like my friend who snapped this).

After the toddlers at the scene were done posing, I obviously had to as well.  It was just so random.  And funny.  And cute.  I live for moments of beautiful strangeness like this, don't you?

:+:

Yes, J is right; if you want to see a better shot of my FABULOUS "Audi S4 special edition blue" ballet flats, peep this one, too.  ;)

Cat in the Hat

IMG_7329, originally uploaded by suitablegirl.

My pictures from the Courage Cup Polo Match (including the Sir-Mixalot-approved back shot) are now up on my Fotolog.  The entire album has been viewable via Flickr, but I actually captioned the shots on flog. ;)

Yenjoy!

Kenyandesi, ANNA, Abhi, Maya and Chai (oh my!)

IMG_5520.JPG, originally uploaded by suitablegirl.

Feel like wasting time now that March Madness is over-- Oh, UConn...my heart, my heart :(  -- and life is back to normal?  Head on over to flickr, where 79 pictures from Saturday's FANTASTIC meetup await your eyes and laughter.

The first-EVER DC SM event couldn't have gone better: a welcoming venue, a three-hour dinner, amazing company, vadas, unexpectedly high attendance, MYSORE MASALA DOSAS, Yo Dad, Abhi's debut, baklava, a chick pea, more merriment at Modern, faces stretched by too much smiling and voices scratchy from too much exclaiming and laughing.  Yeah, in short: perfection.

fun in philly with 7 fotologgers in 7 hours

Img_5321

photographic evidence of this saturday's debauchery in the city of flogly love are up on my wizened fotolog right about now.  for you impatient types, the entire set of EIGHTY-ONE pictures was on Flickr within hours of the event, mais oui (w00t efficient uploading tools).  click the image of my blinged-out phone and platinum clutch resting on the table at Cafe Spice above to get to the Flickr photoset.

if it's fotolog you desire, go here.  and really, why wouldn't you?  it was the reason for the blissful season.  we must do it again, ladies.  on to FEBRUARY birthdays! at this rate, we'll hit sagitarrians next year, about this time. ;)

sweet emotion

Img_5179

pictures from my FABULOUS birthday dinner are now up on le flog, for your enjoyment. ah, it was such a wonderful night. :) giftbags, glitter and gorgeous girls, oh my.

Armageddon is Upon Us; I Updated WIMP

Img_5167

oh, for shame.  in the time it took me to update the most neglected OUTpost of my far-flung online empire, i could have popped out a kid!  i know, i know...i am teh suck.  it's been so long since i touched the fotolog i am writing about, some of the people reading this post will have no clue what i'm discussing.  sigh.  once upon a time, when i had MORE time, i used to regularly tell the world what was in my purse (get it: WIMP).  this was, believe it or not, insanely popular.  so popular that i get hatemail when i haven't updated (unless i take this long, in which case the whimpering eventually stopped).

why do i do this?  am i THAT narcissistic?  you fucking bet i am!  no, it's also b/c i've been doing some version of WIMP for over a decade, although originally, it was nothing public, since that was before the internets had pictures. ;)

dumping out my purse and photographing the contents therein was an immediate, honest visual which captured EXACTLY what was going on in my life at that moment.  cough drops?  bronchitis season.  tampax?  no explanation req'd.  mini-padlock?  went to the gym.  plane ticket stub?  receipt from dinner?  lipgloss(es)? hotel key?  car key?  the choice of purse itself???

see?  the system works.

today's WIMP is a leeeetle different, b/c today is very different.  the aforeblogged picture is a snapshot of what's in my birthday party giftbag.  seemed like an apposite moment to commemorate.  whenever i look at it, i'll remember this afternoon, when i smiled for hours as i stuffed, tied and curled.  can't wait for dinner in...three hours.  :)

i spent seven hours on amtrak for a whopping eight hours in nyc

Img_5114

all you sucka MCs who would like to see pictures from the nyc Sepia Mutiny meetup--which nowhere near compared to the legendary, six-hour San Francisco Meetup--go to flickr and peep this album. actually, most of the pictures are from after the meetup, when Manish and Vinod got me wasted. see: above. good times.

oh, yeah.  word to your brotha.

it's a blogspot sandwich

congrats

pictures from her big fat tamil vedding are up on le flog.  you are not surprised to discover that the entire mini-album is awailable on flickr.

i really like that sari.

oh yeah, mine is cool, too. ;)

last weekend was pure joy, i'm ready for more

Lets_get_it_on

i spy with my big round eyes...a mutineer betwixt my THIGHS.  scandalous! proof that vinod and i will NEVER be politicians is above and on le flog. several of you will be relieved to know that all of the halloween pictures are up on flickr, now that a few hundred of you have perused the SF Meetup album in an attempt to avoid doing anything productive.

yes, yes...eventually all of the rumor-spawning evidence from vinod's dinner party apres-meetup/sunday night (from whence the above photograph came!) will be posted on flickr, too.  just call it "my weekend with vinod" and call it a DRAMA.  ;)

:+:

oh yes, there are also a few shots of her sensitive highness, the german shepherd queen, too:

Img_3943

i like my knickers black, my toys white

Img_3921

all you lot are jealous, yeah?  ;)

i swear i'm about to discontinue this category, b/c i'm really more likely to post pictures on Flickr these days, but i'm in a nostalgic mood (read: fotolog was working on this rare and auspicious occasion). so go.

anyway, all you lot ('cept a certain mutineer) are gene-loves-jezebel level JEA-LOUS.  :D

how do i live without you, i want to know

Flog

sigh.  six photos of the only heir i currently have, now on the flog.  oh, how i miss my pudgesicle.

p.s.  this is what the "main page" of fotolog looks like if you randomly get selected to "rep" your continent.  i'm tickled, really.

p.p.s.  do you love the naughtiest Sepia Mutiny title EVER? ;)

FINALLY! fotos from BlogHer for you flog-philes

Laptop_and_shoes

behold!  my gold-stiletto-clad feet!  this was from the "naked" panel at BlogHer; so many people wanted to get near Dooce, it was standing room only.  though we rushed for the room the session was in b/c we feared precisely this outcome, we were foiled by groupies who were faster. only slightly daunted, chai (she was right next to me) and i headed for the front and sat on the floor, each of us with an iBook in our lap.

poor chai.  some utter retards said some not-nice things about my girl on heather's flickr photostream, on a picture that was taken moments after the one above.  little did they know that maisnon and i have supersonic hearing and we will cut anyone who's mean to our friends.

anyway, the point is, a few pictures from BlogHer are up on le flog...  :)  eventually i'll put up an entire BlogHerCon album on flickr.  now, brown cows, i need to go to BED.

behold: the prettiest sari i've ever owned

1_in_a_million

newest fotolog, featuring fabulous fotos from my fantastic, last-minute trip to chicago for the engagement.  two sets are up, more coming.  if you're my flickr friend/family you get to see even MORE. as soon as i put them up, that is.  i'm getting to it, i'm getting to it...

fermez la bouche, annick

More_kahani

we had an AWESOME writing workshop on saturday-- so awesome, i don't remember it, thanks to "martin blanco" aka all the vanilla stoli, amaretto and kahlua in my espresso.  four of the pictures are now up on my flog; i'll post the rest tomorrow...and they'll meander over to flickr at some point soon, mais oui.

anna and abhi, together at last ;)

21036062_a7aab35d14

i totally ganked this from maisnon's flickr photostream, but i don't think she'll mind.  you see, she's got all the  pictures of me and i have all the photographs of her.  isn't that only logical?  ;)

if you thought this picture of me with abhi from her blog was cute, and this picture of us on her fotolog was amusing, you'll probably enjoy wasting time with six more pictures of my night with the madness. good thing i just uploaded them to le flog.  mais oui, the photos that didn't make the cut festoon my flickr. the system works.  dig.

i really really really hate them...in case i was unclear

Stupid_suv

behold:  my opinion of Stupid Useless Vehicles.

in front of nordstrom rack, i was looking for parking when i saw this egregious bit of bullshit.

though my little sister proudly bought one all by herself when she was 19, i am staunchly SUV-- it`s one of the biggest things we disagree over.  i`m not a fan of any of them (unless you count jeep wranglers, or smaller SUVs like the CRV or hybrid escape et al, which i`m fine with), but if it`s bigger than an explorer/4runner, i think it`s excessive. escalade?  hummer?  EXCURSION???  WHY? i don`t understand the need for something that is so huge, it obstructs the view of those who drive in front of, aside and behind it, especially when it poses a death threat to any car it hits (unless you buy a similar leviathan...and then i ask, when will the madness end?).  the 7mpg doesn`t thrill me either.  i guess SUV-drivers strike me as really selfish b/c of the way they drive, park and behave and it bothers me.  (can you tell?)

i`ve been in arguments w/people who think their trump card argument against me is, "what do you think you`ll do when you have KIDS?"  uh, what my PARENTS did.  they drove a regular four-door sedan.  frankly, i`m a huge fan of station wagons.  i`ve wanted a 4matic with a chrome gate in the back for my future dogs since i was in my teens.

anyway, i couldn`t believe this jackass.  yes, his front end was just inches from the painted line that defined his space, so it wasn`t a question of not driving in all the way.  newsflash: if your vehicle does not fit in a space that *isn`t even marked compact* you`ve got a problem, buddy.  i`m sure you enjoyed the tax break you got on that monster though, and i`m extra thrilled that the government is going to raid MY pathetic bank account for tax money that repairs the roads YOU BREAK WITH YOUR SHITTY, BLOATED, EXCESSIVE TRUCK.

/end rant

my apologies if i offended any flog-land dwellers who own escalades.  please don`t run over my civic, thanks.  :)

from my fotolog.

she has a fotolog, too

Anna_deepa_at_our_table

just in time for your weekend, fresh new flog aqui.  there's actually nine pictures (vs the usual six) from my night at bossa, where i was grooving to karsh kale, just so you're prepared.  and yes, virginia law students, there is puh-lenty of deepa, aka my jaywalking, iPodding lawyer, aka the best comment-leaver EVER.

:+:

when you're bored with fotolog (as if!), you simply MUST read every entry on deepa's new bad-assed blog.  she's SUCH an amazing writer.  what was that concern a few months ago, about how there are not enough women in the blogosphere?   if Deeee is any indication of what's yet to come, we'll be JUST FINE.  go read her, you'll swear the same.  seriously.

there exists a new flog, filled with more pictures from my cousin aji's wedding, if you dare to care. or browse. or leave annoying comments (like: "what happened to your man?" uh, read the fucking blog, "curious"). now the good comments i love, obviously. :D you may leave an abundance of THOSE.

anylay, more pictures await you here, at le flog. if you dawdle long enough, there may even be CAPTIONS. wow. now that's some telesis, there.
