this song is twice ocurred and now it's time to go away

Today is Friday and that means that at some point in the next 21 hours, I'm going to write 55 words which contain an entire story.  I'm not that big on memes but this one ("55 Fiction Fridays") is precious to me, because it reminds me of writing exercises and workshops and english minor-y goodness.

Flash fiction, also called sudden fiction, micro fiction, postcard fiction or short-short fiction, is a class of short story of limited word length. Definitions differ but is generally accepted that flash fiction stories are at most 200 to 1000 words in length. Ernest Hemingway wrote a six-word flash: "For sale. Baby shoes. Never worn." Traditional short stories are 2,000 to 10,000 words in length.[wiki]

That Hemingway example is ridiculously inspiring.  One day I want to write a short that short.  I don't even know if there is a name for a short so short.  There is, however, a name for the type of writing this meme encourages:

One type of flash fiction is the short story with an exact word count. An example is 55 Fiction or Nanofiction. These are complete stories, with at least one character and a discernible plot, exactly 55 words long.[wiki]

Today's 55:

She was transfixed by what loomed in front of her…two roads diverged, one north, one west, two possibilities, one choice.  Dharma, history and the sure thing to her left, but her heart’s desire, her true love, lay the other way.

Am I too old to be selfish, she thought?  Is it too late for me?

S, don't think the lady is so knife that she'll take your advice.
Oh. Hello, Anna!

Hello?

hey Anna,
Great job as usual. I really admire your dedication to making this site as well as SM so interesting to read. Not to "read" too much into your 55 words, but I hope that for a person of your beauty and energy, the right path finds you.

North and west, the two parts of the fork labeled. That is quite a fork indeed, and one that resonates here. (Mind you, I don't presume that the first person voice is necessarily yours.)

Is it mere coincidence that dharma, history, etc. is to her left; while her true love is right in front of her? I assume she's facing north ...

Grrr... I want to cheer on the westward path, *but* we must all find our own true loves, and follow them. Regretting leaving the path you really wanted is worse than being selfish.

Hey Anna,

Thanks for putting a smile on my face. It was the Anna AKA thing that did it.

Nice to know that you like Gwen too. And thanks for the info on Karmacy.

You've motivated me. I'm going to try this, I think.

Late for School

Beep, beep wake up.
Dammit it’s 7:55.
Gotta get ready
What will I wear?
Blue jeans, black shirt
I’m gonna be late.
Clean socks, clean shoes.
School starts at 8:15.
I’m gonna have to run.
The clock is ticking faster.
It’s 8:10.
I open the door.
Bye mom
“Where are you going dear, it Saturday.”

Special Delivery

My heart is broken in two. I hope he’s hurting as well. Our love was something that couldn’t last and he let me know it. The love in his eyes when he said good-bye was too much to bear. But now I’m left with the memory of him. And now my brothers are at his door.
